Baby Safety Month

Baby Safety Month

September is Baby Safety Month. It was introduced by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) in 1983 with “Expectant Mother’s Day.” In 1986, the day was increased to a week of baby safety, then in 1991, it became a month. The safety campaign changes focus yearly and has won awards for public engagement.

In honor of Baby Safety Month, we’ve compiled some great basic safety tips to remember when caring for the littlest ones.

1. Babies should be rear-facing as long as possible in their car seats. Make sure the seats are installed correctly, straps are tight, and that clothing isn’t too bulky. (Check manual for car seats on weight limits for rear facing installation).

2. Be sure your space is baby-proof before the baby is mobile. Install baby gates, furniture tethers, outlet covers, cabinet locks, door knob covers and more.

3. Make sure babies are put to sleep on their backs, in a crib that meets safety standards. There should be nothing in the crib except a firm mattress and a sheet.

4. Take extra care when bathing infants. They can be slippery! Make sure the water is an appropriate temperature, the tub is slip-resistant, and NEVER leave the baby alone.

5. Avoid foods that are possible allergens or choking hazards. Also be sure to keep small objects that the baby could put in his/her mouth out of reach.

6. Never leave a baby unattended with pets, siblings, water, or where they may fall.

September is the perfect time to brush up on safety skills and baby proof your home if needed. Accidents are always a leading cause of death in young children, so it is important to be mindful of safety and surroundings.
